Young At Heart
March Event:
Young at Heart to Visit Ratner Museum
March 21, 2012 9:00am
Are you ready for a new experience? Then come with us to the Ratner Museum in Bethesda. Phillip Ratner is an artist whose sculptures you may have seen at Ellis Island, the White House, the Vatican, or throughout DC and Israel. We will be especially interested in seeing his Biblical renditions. It is amazing how so much emotion and glory can be shown through this artist’s hands. You will be blessed and in awe of the works exhibited. This is truly an ecumenical experience: The artist is Jewish, our tour leader is Catholic and then there is us!
The museum is not large and there is an elevator. The first floor and Gallery building are given over to rotating exhibits. The second floor is for the Biblical exhibition. There is no admission fee for the museum. Exhibitions at the museum include:
- A permanent collection of the art of Phillip Ratner in sculpting, drawing, painting and graphics.
- Exhibits of the works of established and emerging artists which change each month - water colors, pastels, acrylics, oils, colored pencils, print makers, collages, silk panels, photography, glass, wood, and metal sculptures, fiber, quilts and wool works.
Go to www.ratnermuseum.com to see more about the artist and the museum.
On March 21 we plan to leave DUMC by carpool at 9:00. Our private tour is scheduled to start at 10:00 and will be led by De La Salle Christian Brother Edward Adams who has been a teacher and administrator for 23 years. He is currently Director of Interfaith Activities at the Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum and a board member of the Interfaith Conference of Metro Washington DC. Afterwards we will be eating lunch just down the road at Hamburger Hamlet where they have soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees. Everyone will order and pay on their own. If you want, after lunch you can return to spend more time at the museum. There will be a $5.00 gas charge for those who carpool with someone.
DEADLINE: Please return the form below to Jacque Janss at church or mail to 2501 Coleridge Dr, Unit 3C, Frederick, MD. 21702. You also may call Jacque at 301-620-7276 or Sue Bradley at 1-301-926-0469 or Bob Newlin at 301-620- 8926 by the MARCH 12th DEADLINE for reservations.

Who Are We:
We are a group of mostly 50+ adults who enjoy going places, taking interesting “day trips”, eating, laughing, and generally enjoying each others company once a month. There are no membership rules: age, church affiliation, or anything else. In fact we don’t even have members! Everyone and anyone can participate and guests are especially welcome.
What Do We Do:
We’re all about Fellowship, Fun, Friends, & Food. We go on a number of adventures or explorations each year to attractions within “day trip” range. Our adventures or explorations are usually to cultural sites, nature sites, theatres, restaurants, sporting events (annually to a Frederick Keys baseball game), etc. We always manage to enjoy a dining or luncheon experience as an integral part of every trip. The group also has a number of luncheons each year, and our annual Christmas Dinner. Most activities are during the week with periodic weekend activities sprinkled in.
Leadership:
Bob Newlin and Jacque Janss informally lead us, but activities for each year are planned in a January get together of all who have ideas to bring forth. Once the activities for the year are set, various individuals handle the detail planning and coordination of each event.
Open Invitation:
Everyone who sees this webpage is welcome to participate in Young At Heart activities and events – no restrictions. You don’t need to be a member of Damascus United Methodist Church, or any Church, you don’t have to be in any specific age category. There are no requirements or restrictions of any kind. You just need to be interested in participating and open to being welcomed by other participants.
Young at Heart Schedule for Events for 2012
If you want to have fun and fellowship with like minded people during 2012 get out your calendars and enter the dates below for Young at Heart activities each month during the year. All adults associated with the church and their friends and neighbors are welcome. You don't have to join. Just participate in the events that appeal to you. Watch the Beacon for specific details and reservation deadlines each month. The Steering Committee tried to cut back on more expensive events in view of the current economic situation.
