        DAMASCUS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY
Route 124, Woodfield Road, Damascus, Maryland 20872

An alphabetical, row-by-row documentation of burials.

Almost 10 years of extensive research, completed in 2009, has resulted in the information presented here.

See a diagram of the cemetery layout.

See an alphabetical listing of burials.

See a list of known interments without tombstones.

See the current cemetery information and policy.

The included names are the ACTUAL markings on each tombstone.  Pictures have been taken of all existing tombstones 2002-2011.  The earliest death was 1865 (Laura Gue).  There are many stones, which are no longer legible.  A few others may be legible during particular times of the day, depending on the angle of the sun.  A plot of the entire cemetery, furnished by Gary Richard, the current superintendent of the cemetery, was also used for this project.

A special thanks to Bernardine Gladhill Beall who reviewed this document and added/corrected data that Ms. Baltrotsky was unable to read or did not know.  Also, a special thanks to Bobby Williams and Rick Kendall at the Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home for allowing Bernardine Beall and Marianne Baltrotsky to review their records (records from 1966- Oct. 2008).  Most burials were done by Molesworth-Williams, J. B. Beall, or Barber Funeral Homes.  The history of Molesworth-Williams funeral home can be accessed at www.molesworthwilliams.com.  A listing of buried people who do not have tombstones in the cemetery is provided in the link above.  Records or obituaries indicate they are interred here.  The cemetery plot blueprint was also used to locate graves, but many of the plots were used for burials other than the names which appear on this plot.  A local Damascus Boy Scout Troop uncovered many footstones that were covered by grass and/or dirt, which helped in this study.  The oldest section, Section I, was evaluated by the Mosko Cemetery Restoration Company and the Damascus Cemetery Committee voted to have this section restored.  Restoration began in the Fall of 2006 and was completed within the following year, at considerable cost.

The Montgomery County Historical Society has 3 x 5 cards that were typed as “Ledgers of Molesworth Funeral Home”.  It is not known who compiled these cards many years ago.  Also, a special thanks to Mickey Day for Damascus Cemetery books of interments from 1913 - 1930.  Marianne Uhler Baltrotsky photographed each tombstone now standing in the cemetery and she has obituaries for about 75% of the people interred.  A row-by-row listing, with complete dates and a brief 2-generation study, where possible, will be posted on this website later in 2011. (This is a work in progress, a labor of love, for Ms. Baltrotsky)

The Boyer Chapel is located on the grounds of this cemetery.  To the left of the front door is a tombstone and cornerstone “This Chapel is Built to Memorialize the Life of George Milton Boyer, M.D., Diligent and Faithful Servant to God and his Fellowman.”  “Presented in 1954 to Damascus Methodist Church by his son, Milton McKendree Boyer, M.D.”

To the right of the front door is a tombstone: George Milton Boyer, M.D., May 22, 1872 - Sept. 21, 1956; Annie Marie Boyer, Jan. 27, 1877 - Jan. 20, 1974; Milton McKendree Boyer, M.D., Mar. 25, 1907 - Dec. 28, 1978, all on one tombstone.  They are entombed in crypts in the chapel floor.  Also entombed in crypts in the Boyer Chapel, but with no tombstone on the exterior of the chapel indicating such are: Susan Elizabeth Boyer, May 14, 1905 - Feb. 26, 1993; Mary Jo Boyer Lambert, Sept. 21, 1935 - Nov. 8, 1994; and her husband, John William Lambert, Sr., Nov. 12, 1920 - Aug. 15, 1996.

Behind the Boyer Chapel are the graves of several Miles/Clodfelter family members.  There is one family stone – on the East side is the Clodfelter surname; on the West side is the Miles surname.  There is a footstone for each of the following: James Robert Clodfelter, 1943 - 1999; Dorcas Miles Clodfelter, 1915 - 1969; Druid A. Clodfelter, 1912 - 2005; Lillian M. Miles, 1894 - 1987; Roby Byrd Miles, 1888 - 1975; Emily Miles Clodfelter, 1920 - 2008.
