Holy Week 2014

 

PALM SUNDAY, APRIL 13, 2014 FESTIVAL SERVICES:

  8:15 am  – Worship service celebrates Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem

11:00 am  – Worship service celebrates Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem

Filled with excitement, all the happy throng, spread cloaks and branches on the city streets.

In our annual tradition of re-enacting Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem, cries of Hosanna are shouted amidst the lively rhythms of flutes, brass, and percussion.  Excitement soon gives way to sober quietness, calling us to devotion.

Prayer Vigil                              6am - 10pm Sanctuary

This time of meditation and fellowship is open to all; please bring money for a meal out.

 

MAUNDY THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2014:

  5:30 pm –  Festive Seder Meal (child friendly) - DUMC Dining Hall

Eating symbolic foods that retell the Passover story of the Israelites leaving Egypt, we share the symbolic meal Jesus shared with his Disciples.  A meal of soup, salad, and bread will be served as part of this celebration.  Please call the church office by April 14th to make your reservation.


  7:00 pm –  Maundy Thursday Service of the Lord’s Supper, DUMC Sanctuary

Communion will be celebrated in the remembrance of the Last Supper, followed by ceremonial stripping of the sanctuary's adornments.  Music will be shared by the Chancel Choir and Matthew Miante, bass.

 

GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 2014:

12:00 pm - 3:00 pm – Vigil of the Cross ecumenical services led by area clergy

A series of seven 25-minute services, based on the Seven Last Words of Christ, will be led by preachers from local churches in Damascus, with special music from Polly Baldridge, soprano, and Stephen Kalsnoske, organ.


  7:00 pm – Haydn Seven Last Words of Christ, DUMC Sanctuary

HOLY SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2014:

  7:00 pm – The Great Confirmation Easter Vigil Service

As the second century Church welcomed new believers on Easter Eve, so we welcome our confirmands in this ancient tradition.  The Charles Wesley Singers will lead in worship.

 

 

EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 2014:

  5:50 am – Early Easter Sunrise Service (led by 1st year Confirmation students),Jones' Lawn, Mt. Vernon Ave., adjacent to the Annex

On this great day of celebration, voices, organ, and brass make music to uplift the resurrection and presence of our living Lord in the gathered company of believers.  We joyfully share Wesley's Christ the Lord is Risen Today, the joyous Lift High the Cross, and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.
